I’ve seen Pink Floyd several times in the past, and they’ve been in my top-5 all-time bands for pretty much all my time. Comfortably Numb is my #1 song of all time, and I’d count both The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon among my top-ten albums. So it was with much excitement that I discovered that Brit Floyd would be coming to Grand Rapids in March – so when tickets went on sale I bought great seats dead in the center of the first row in the balcony of DeVos Place performance hall. I questioned my sanity a bit at paying $50 for a cover band, but the more I read about the band, the better I felt.
My new photography assistant
Every now and then Aly shows an interest in taking pictures, so I took her with me in March on my first visit to the Upper Macatawa Natural Area in Zeeland. This park has two entrances and several miles of trail that wind throw lowlying swamps, wooded areas, and farm fields. It was a pretty place that I’m sure will be spectacular in the summer once the plants color up, and we had a nice walk despite the bitter wind pecking at our faces. Aly discovered some clingy thorny things and was thoroughly amused by sticking them to her scarf and gloves. I spent about ten minutes pulling all the barbs out.
The beauty of Saugatuck State Park
I have absolutely fallen in love with Saugatuck State Park over the last six months and each hike seems to find new subject matter for the camera. These pictures were from a great hike in late March along the South Trail on a gorgeous day.
No gloves required. Finally.
In late March, I had my first hike of the year at SSP that didn’t requires winter gloves – I even saw a guy hiking in sandals, complaining about how much snow was still on the trail.

Pets. No thanks.
We’ve had pets over the years, but decided before Aly was born that we’d have no more pets, so we found new homes for our two cats, had a baby, and life was grand. Our house isn’t huge to begin with, and we’ve got several people in the house who seem to have allergies to pet dander, plus we like to relax at home and already feel like having a house means we have to spend more time at home not relaxing than we’d prefer. Take that, sentence structure and coherence! We actually almost got a dog a few years before Aly was born, but we decided that we’d have a kid instead.
