We took the obligatory picture in front of the sign and checked out the atmosphere of the tournament setup in the gym of the Zeeland East high school. Rachel helped Aly practice Form 3 one final time before the students were called to gather.

Aly’s group was the first summoned to one of the four areas, which was good so she wouldn’t have to overthink things. She claimed not to be nervous, but I think this picture (and others I’m not posting) may show otherwise.

 Aly’s performance of Form Three

Aly competed with four other kids in her division in form three, a more seasoned yellow belt and three white belts. Alphabeticality dictated that Aly went first, which we were relieved to see, as she was starting to turn a bit white sitting and waiting.

We thought she performed fairly well and even did well with some of the things she’d been having trouble with, though she was a bit quick going through the routine. Did you notice she looked straight at the camera a couple times? As you can see below, Aly was clearly not relieved by completing her turn, so we saw mostly this face while she watched the other 6 kids in her area compete.

 Trophy time

Her mood was about to improve, however, as the judges tallied the scores and they called the kids forward for the trophy presentation.

She was very proud of herself with her second place finish, and we were too. Aly stuck around for a while to watch some of the other groups compete and get an idea of what she’ll compete in next year, including boarding breaking. Oh boy.
